Pushkar is a famous town in Rajasthan, India. Pushkar refers to being born from flower. According to Hindu mythology, a swan was released by the Gods. Its beak carried a lotus. The idea was to get that lotus fall to the earth. At that spot where the lotus would fall, Brahma was supposed to perform a big yagna. As the lotus fell at this place, Pushkar got its name. Pushkar History
Historically, Pushkar always had great strategic importance and was sacked by Mahumud of Ghazni on one of his periodic forays from Afghanistan. Later it became a favorite residence of the great Moghula. One of the first contacts between the Moghula and the British occurred in Pushkar when Sir Thomas Roe met with Jahangir here in 1616. The city was subsequently taken by the Scindias and, in 1818, it was handed over to the British, becoming one of the few places in Rajasthan controlled directly by British rather than being part of a princely state.

Pushkar Temples
Brahma Temple Pushkar
The only temple of its type, the Brahma temple is an important pilgrim centre for the Hindus. The Brahma temple is nestled in the Pushkar valley, which lies beyond Nagaparvat and the Anasagar Lake.
Savitri Temple Pushkar
The Savitri temple is dedicated to Goddess Savitri, Lord Brahma's first wife. It is located on the hill behind the Brahma temple. To reach the temple one has to climb a long series of steps. The site of the Savitri temple provides a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding sand dunes.
Rangji Temple Pushkar
The Rangji temple is very gracious. It is considered very conspicuous, due to its south Indian style of architecture. The temple has a high rising 'Gopuram', typical of southern India.
Warah Temple Pushkar
The Warah temple is another famous temple of Pushkar. It houses an image of lord Vishnu in the incarnation of the wild boar. The temples of Brahma and Warah are considered equally important. It is believed that king Anaji Chauhan built the Warah temple.
Accommodation in Pushkar
There are a number of hotels and resorts, catering to the needs of different types of tourists, in Pushkar. However, it is sometimes difficult to find accommodation or room in Pushkar, particularly if one arrives late in the day. Some of the resorts in Pushkar are fancy but most of the hotels are simple yet clean and freshly painted or whitewashed.
During the Pushkar Camel fair, accommodation is provided in special make shift tents in a tourist village. It is self-sufficient and specially designed to harmonize the natural beauty of the place. The village provides for a coffee shop and a dining hall that can cater to around 1,500 guests at a time. This tourist village is arranged in blocks of tents, each having its own identity, named after the famous dances of Rajasthan. There is also a provision of huts with attached western style toilets and running water.
How to Reach Pushkar
One of the most scared places for the Hindus, Pushkar town is situated about 11 kms (7 miles) to the North-West of Ajmer. One can travel to Pushkar via air, rail and roads.
By Air : The nearest airport from Pushkar is located in Jaipur which is 131 km away.
By Rail : Ajmer is connected to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Abu Road and Jodhpur by regular trains. Two of the best trains of the Indian Railways, Pink City Express and Shatabdi Express connect Ajmer to Delhi and Jaipur.
By Road : Pushkar has to two bus stands. The Marwar bus stand is situated to the north of the town by the post office and has buses to some long distance places including Delhi, Jodhpur and Bikaner. The Ajmer bus stand is located east of the Pushkar town and offers bus services to Ajmer and Jaipur.
